Happy 4th of July to the Great Satan!
With all the recent negative publicity surrounding Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and the War on Terror, it is high time someone (and it might as well be a right-of-centre contrarian like me) said:
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!

God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife.
Who more than self the country loved
And mercy more than life!

May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

Thank you for posting this, David. I doubt that more than one American in a thousand has ever heard or even read the very beautiful third and final verses of "America the Beautiful". Many would make this great hymn our national anthem in place of the musically impossible "Star-Spangled Banner."
If you think the "Star-Spangled Banner" is musically impossible, you should listen to "Advance Australia Fair"; most people know the first and last two lines of the first verse, and they fill the rest in with "dum dum dum dum, dah dah dah"....
